OVERVIEW

Why we should not miss Rupin Pass Trek

Rupin Pass is a high altitude pass across the Himalayan mountain range in the state of Himachal Pradesh India. It lies on a traditional shepherd and hiking route which starts from Dhaula in Uttarakhand and ends in Sangla in Himachal Pradesh. The path itself is located across mostly uninhabited areas in the Himalayan ranges at an elevation of 15,250 ft. The trek takes you through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the Indian Himalayas. As one of the most sought-after treks in the region, it promises to leave you mesmerized with its panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, snow-capped mountains, and pristine glacial valleys. The trek passes through several villages and shepherd camps in the Rupin river valley. Rupin is a tributary of the Tons River and meets Supin River at Netwar. The trek is full of surprises at every step which includes the Jakha Village also known as the hanging village. The unique position of the village on the edge of the mountain makes it appear as if the village was hanging through the cliff. Apart from this, you will encounter a number of snow bridges, deep dark forests of fir, Oak & Rhododendron, waterfalls that appear to be falling from the sky and the view of majestic Kinner Kailash at the end of the Rupin Pass Trek will surely leave you spellbound.

DAY-WISE TREK ITINERARY

After a briefing from our Team Leader we start our trek through the farms until you enter dense forest. The trail is full of apple and apricot trees and you will be greeted with streams in the last leg of the trail. As you reach Sewa, the crowned jewel of the village is an ancient Shiva temple that opens once every 12 years. Camp overnight at Sewa village.

Day 03: Trek from Sewa to Jakha (6,900 ft – 8,900 ft)

Trek Distance: 12 kms||Trek Time: 6-7 hrs

Today we will be entering Himachal Pradesh after we leave Sewa Campsite. The trail will be a hard one and today we will be ascending in the first leg of our trek followed by a descend to the riverbed through deodar and walnut trees up to Jakha. Jhaka is a small village, popularly known as the hanging village as it rests on the edge of the mountain side. Camp overnight at Jhaka.

Day 04: Trek from Jakha to Dhanderas Thatch (8,900 ft – 11,700 ft)

Trek Distance: 10.5 kms ||Trek Time: 8-9 hrs

The trail makes its way out of the village through a playground, before entering a dense fir forest. We will cross the bridge over the Rupin River and then our trail will lead us right into the vibrant forest of Rhododendron trees.

After walking for few kilometers we will reach a vast valley. The Valley will get the most exquisite and bewitching views to enjoy, thousands of waterfalls rushing down below us with the panoramic mountain views is a sight to behold. Our Campsite will be right in the middle of the valley where we can enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains around us.

Day 05: Trek from Dhanderas Thatch to Upper Waterfall Camp (11,700 ft – 13,400 ft)

Trek Distance: 2.5 kms ||Trek Time: 2-3 hrs

The start of the trek will lead us to sights of several rivulets and waterfalls and we’ll take through vibrant marigold flowers. After we exit the base of Dhanderas, we’ll be trekking on rocks till we reach a thick snow-covered trail.

This day is very important for proper acclimatization. Since the entire walk is mostly on snow and ice, a trekking pole and ice axe will come in handy today. This will also test our potential of trekking on snow using ice axe, trekking pole and we would know how to slide on snow. These techniques would help us when we will cross a vast snow bridge. It is an outstanding experience watching the Rupin River flowing from high above through a waterfall. After reaching the top of the waterfall, there is a meadow which will be our campsite for the day.

Day 06: Trek from Upper Waterfall Camp to Ronti Gad Via Rupin Pass (13,400 ft – 15,250 ft – 13,200 ft)

Trek Distance: 8 kms ||Trek Time: 9-10 hrs

Today will be the most difficult day of our trek so we need to be very careful in each step we take. This is the longest trail of Rupin Pass which begins with a steep ascendant, with huge gain in altitude, an hour of climbing, take left trail and discover a total different and amazing sights from the Rati Pheri campsite.

The only views from Rati Pheri are of the expanse of thick snow stretched all over, making our paths through them is our next exhausting task for the day to reach Rupin Pass Gully.

The most exciting part of our trek has come as we make our way to Rupin Pass, we will walk carefully because of the altitude and uncertain trail, and soon we will be at Rupin Pass which would mean we are at over 15,000 ft and has swiftly conquered our goal.

Panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range and pristine clear snow covering the tallest mountains in the Indian Himalayan range. The breathtakingly beautiful view at the height of 15,250 will leave you speechless, the panorama of white mountains with clouds hovering over them is truly a sight to behold. After hearty congratulations to each other and exploring the Rupin pass and enjoying the splendid surroundings, we will start trekking down to our Campsite Ronti Gad.
