Hampta Pass Trek is a crossover trek that is most popular for its breathtaking views and the stark contrast of landscape. The difference in landscape is noticeable just minutes apart from the lush green valley of Kullu to barren mountains of Lahaul Valley. It is located along the Pir Panjal ranges of Himalaya. A number of wildflowers just adorn the place. The place also gives a balcony view of the rest of Kullu valley. The landscapes and scenery around are so dynamic that it keeps on changing as we climb up, making the trek really interesting. The trek begins from the picturesque hill station of Manali and takes you through the lush green forests of pine, oak, and maple trees, as you gain altitude towards the Hampta Pass. The trek route also includes the beautiful villages of Sethan and Chika and the stunning Hampta snow valley. Trekkers can also enjoy panoramic views of the towering Himalayan peaks, including Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and Hanuman Tibba.

The drive is scenic and 2 hours long. Then we reach the beginning point from where we start our trek. The initial part is through the pine forest until we reach the Rani River valley. The forest route lasts for around one hour and we arrive on an open green land. We descend down and take the route going through the valley. The entire trail is flat and mild uphill and it passes through the valley along the Rani River. The further route takes 2 hours to reach the Chika campsite.
Trek Distance: 8.5 kms || Time taken: 5-6 hrs
On this day, the trek will begin through grasslands and rocky paths. On the way you will witness grasslands which are covered with beautiful wildflowers post monsoon season. The trail further leads to a small stream of ice cold water. This stream needs to be crossed carefully as the rocks are slippery so remove your shoes for a better grip. From Balu Ka Ghera you can view the beautiful Dhauladhar Range.
Balu Ka Ghera is covered with snow and greens whereas the name implies a mound of sand. But it is said that this place was formed with sands and dust deposited by the river and hence the name.
Trek Distance: 8 kms || Time taken: 8-9 hrs
This is the most spectacular part of the trek as we cross the Hampta Pass and then descend to our camp site in Shea Goru. From Hampta Pass you can see the Indrasan Peak and its gigantic glacier. Such a variety in one region is what makes the Hampta Pass Trekking most attractive among trekkers. The climb to Hampta Pass is a vertical one, hence the difficulty level will be increased today. Once you are at the Pass, the raw beauty of nature will unfold in front of you. Being surrounded by the rolling hills, white snowy fields and still standing mountains will capture the awe of each person.
Trek Distance: 7 kms || Time taken: 4-5 hrs
We start by crossing the icy cold Shea goru River and continue the trek on the right side of the river. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach Chatru. Chatru can be seen from a distance. No vegetation can be seen in the barren mountains. The tricky part comes next. We will have to be careful as the trail might sometimes lead us to the end of ridges. The route has slippery parts too so we need to be very careful.
Chatru is a magnificent camping site as it is the confluence of three passes Hampta, Rohtang and Spiti.
Drive Distance: 165 kms || Time taken: 10 -11 hrs
The drive from Chatru to Chandratal is around 4-5 hours long. The conditions of the roads are too bad and gives the pure essence of the World’s Treacherous road. Reach Chandratal and enjoy the beauty of this high altitude alpine lake.
Chandratal, also called Moon Lake, is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau in the Spiti valley. Nestled amidst the mountains, at an altitude of 14,074 ft above the sea level, the lake is known for its clear blue waters, magnificent views of CB-12 peak and pristine environment. Then we drive back to Manali.
Today, we will rest at Manali. This day can be used as Buffer Day in between the trek days also. This depends on weather condition & health condition of the group.
