For those who love nature but don’t relish sweating across long treks, the ‘Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary’ provides an ideal excursion. Located in the south-west corner of West Sikkim and spreading over 104sq km across the ridge of the Singalila range, it forms part of India’s natural international border with Nepal. The protected forest is home to Silver Fir, Hemlock, Magnolia and the Rhododendron.
The 2-3 hours journey through the sanctuary will be a wonderful memory to cherish for time to come. If you want to see the riot of colours, the month of March and April will be ideal for you. This is the season when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. There’s plenty of action for keen birdwatchers as well. The silence of the forest evokes a sense of eerie and serenity at the same time.
At the end of the 4km trek you can take shelter in Guras Kunj, the only trekker’s hut situated at Barsey. Nestled amidst of the forest, overlooking Mt. Kanchenjunga the trekker’s hut offers comfortable accommodation. The peaceful ambiance, the lush greenery around and the magnificent view of Kanchenjunga are reason enough to stay in Barsey for a couple of days.
